Artistic Project ” ANOTHER ENGLAND “
Phillip Toledano, 2025 — published by L’Artiere
With Another England, Phillip Toledano continues his exploration of “historical surrealism,” investigating how artificial intelligence reshapes our perception of reality, memory, and truth.
His images transport us into a parallel England, suspended between dream and documentary: a sheep levitates above a pile of branches, bioluminescent jellyfish illuminate misty Devonshire villages, humans bloom into flowers as if touched by a botanical epidemic. These impossible yet believable scenes feel like fragments of a distorted collective memory—echoes of a past that never truly existed.
In Another England, plausibility becomes the new language of the absurd. Toledano uses A.I. not to imitate reality, but to expose its fragility. In a world where every image can be both true and false at once, he stages the collapse of objectivity, returning to the image its poetic and unsettling dimension.
The result is a visual narrative of great power and irony—a journey through an imaginary country that, with clarity and vision, mirrors the fractured nature of our present.
