Artistic Project ” ANOTHER AMERICA “
Phillip Toledano, 2024 — published by L’Artiere
With Another America, Phillip Toledano redefines the boundary between reality and fiction, exploring how images can reinvent history itself. Set in an imagined America of the 1940s and 1950s — an era when photography was regarded as the language of truth — the project uses Artificial Intelligence to construct a parallel universe made of people, events, and visions that never existed, yet appear entirely real.
His images, suspended between familiarity and strangeness, evoke an alternative reality where cigarettes exhale from the back of the head, faces catch fire, jellyfish float through polluted city skies, and animals care for abandoned children in the streets of New York. Within this surreal theatre, Toledano exposes the fragility of what we call visual truth.
Described by the artist as a form of “historical surrealism,” Another America is both a poetic and conceptual experiment on the power of Artificial Intelligence to manipulate memory and reshape our perception of reality. Each image becomes a question: what remains true in a world where every lie can have its own convincing proof?
